This web site celebrates the Sikorsky S-55 helicopter and its many accomplishments. It is also dedicated to S-55 Serial Number 55-433, currently N111VA.
Helicopter N111VA (formerly N417A) is America's first helicopter airliner. On July 8, 1953 N417A carried the first scheduled passengers in The United States of America while being operated by New York Airways. This historic flight earned New York Airways its prestigious nickname, "The First Helicopter Airline".
July 8, 2008 will be the 55th anniversary of the first flight. Helicopter N111VA will be flying back to New York to perform an anniversary flight that duplicates the same route it flew 55 years earlier. It will be the first time in history that something like this will be done.
